Discussing genetic testing with your family
We know talking to family can be challenging. Some people find it easier to start these conversations in writing. If you would like to email your family to let them know that you have recently had a genetic test, you may consider using the template email provided below. You can copy and paste the text that we have prepared, and send this letter from your own email account.
If you choose to use the email template provided, please be aware that emails sent to some webmail services (e.g. Gmail, Hotmail, etc.), may be stored/routed outside of Canada. We cannot guarantee that the content of the email will remain private.
Dear [enter your family member name here],
I am writing to share with you that I have recently had genetic testing through the Hereditary Cancer Program at BC Cancer. As a result of my testing, you may be eligible to have the same test done, at no cost to you.
Genetic testing can give you and your healthcare providers information about your risk of developing cancer in the future. If you are found to have an increased risk, there are ways to try and find a cancer early or to prevent it altogether.
I would be happy to speak with you about my test results. If you would like to contact me, I am available at [insert your telephone or email].
If you would prefer to contact the Hereditary Cancer Program directly, you are welcome to do so at: 604-877-6000 local 672198 or toll-free 1-800-663-3333, local 672198.
Sincerely, [enter your name here]
